GSU Baseball Pregame

GRAMBLING -- Grambling State looks to make up ground in the Southwestern Athletic Conference's Western Division today as the Tigers play host to Prairie View A&M.
The teams will play a doubleheader starting at noon today at the Ruston High School baseball field and will play another doubleheader on Friday beginning at 10 a.m.
GSU stands at 11-10 overall and 5-7 in the SWAC West while Texas Southern is 7-14 and 6-6.
The Tigers were swept in a four-game series at Southern last weekend and hasn't played an official game since. Grambling started a game at Texas College on Tuesday but that game was cancelled after rain washed things out at the start of the fourth inning.
"We're at home and we really need to come out and make something positive happen," GSU coach Wilbert Ellis said. "This is a good chance to make a little progress in the conference race, so we really need to go in and try to take all four games."
Sophomore centerfielder James Cooper leads the Tigers with a .424 batting average with nine RBIs and two home runs while senior first baseman Alberto Campbell is batting .381 with a team-leading 25 RBIs.
Third baseman Jacobi Frank has also had a hot bat for Grambling in recent games and is hitting .324 with four home runs and 22 RBIs.
Senior righthander Roy Foster (4-1) is expected to start game one for the Tigers and brings a 1.25 ERA into the contest with a team-high 33 strikeouts.
Junior southpaw Melvin Tolliver (2-3) is GSU's game two probable starter on the mound and has an ERA of 5.32.
"Losing all four games at Southern last week makes this home series even more important," Ellis said. "You have to try to win all of your home games and then end up being able to steal one or two on the road. We didn't win any on the road last week, making these home games very important."
