GRAMBLING -- Grambling State looks to extend a four-game win streak today as the Tigers play a 2 p.m. contest at Jackson State.
GSU stands at 15-15 overall after sweeping the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff in a four-game series last weekend. JSU is now 13-12 and is coming off a pair of losses.
Grambling enters the contest batting .288 as a team with freshman shortstop Joshua Scott leading the way with a .462 batting average and three RBIs while sophomore shortstop James Cooper is hitting .405 with 11 RBIs and three home runs.
A trio of Tigers have provided much of Grambling State's power with senior first baseman Alberto Campbell leading the team with seven home runs and 28 RBIs while designated hitter Jacobi Frank has six homers and 28 RBIs.
Junior infielder Kevin Camp has added seven home runs with 20 RBIs for the Tigers.
"We need to keep up that kind of good hitting against Jackson State," GSU coach Wilbert Ellis said. "We played some of our best ball of the season last weekend against Arkansas-Pine Bluff and now we have to try to maintain the momentum."
Jackson State is batting .268 as a team with freshman infielder Bryant Lange leading JSU with a .333 batting average with one home run and 10 RBIs. Junior Chris Outlaw is hitting .329 for JSU with one home run and 16 RBIs while outfielder Michael Goss has a .329 batting average with 16 RBIs.
Outfielder Robert Felton is the only other JSU batter over .330 at .324 with one home run and 18 RBIs.
"Jackson (State) looks like they have some pretty good young hitters," Ellis said. "We'll need a strong performance from our young pitchers if we want to get the win."
Ellis said he expects to start one of three southpaws against Jackson State. Freshman Elias Rodriquez stands at 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA while junior Kennedy McFarland is 0-2 and junior Tori Worrall is 0-1.
Grambling faced JSU twice last season with Jackson State taking both wins.
JSU took a 10-0 home win on March 6 of 2000 before taking a 22-18 win on May 5 of last year to eliminate Grambling State from last season's Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament.
"You don't think of any kind of payback at this point in the season," Ellis said. "We just need to play the best baseball we can and try to get out of there with the win. We're just trying to keep the streak going."
