GRAMBLING - Grambling State went to the long ball Wednesday as the Tigers cruised to a 17-0 win over Jarvis Christian at the Ruston High School baseball field.
The win pushed the Tigers to 11-6 on the season. GSU next takes to the road to face Southern in a Southwestern Athletic Conference West Division four-game series on Friday and Saturday.
Grambling picked up 14 hits and four home runs in the abbreviated affair, which JC gave up on in the middle of the sixth inning.
Junior second baseman Kevin Camp led the Tigers with two homers on the day while James Cooper and Alberto Campbell also hit round-trippers for GSU.
"We needed another good game like this heading into the Southern series," GSU coach Wilbert Ellis said. "We did a good job swinging the bat, and we'll need a lot more of that against Southern."
Camp batted 2-for-3 on the day with five RBIS while Campbell went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Jacobi Frank and Carl Johnson each added 2-for-4 batting performances for the Tigers.
Freshman pitcher Elias Rodriguez picked up his first career win to move to 1-0, working three innings and giving up one hit while striking out three Bulldogs. Khwame O'Neal worked two innings on the mound for GSU, giving up one hit with three strikeouts while Phillip Ingram was perfect in the only inning he threw for the Tigers.
"I really had hoped to give at least a couple more of younger pitchers some more work, but Jarvis was ready to go with the score like it was," Ellis said. "I was very pleased with the three pitchers we used and it was good to get them some experience. We might need them against Southern."
Grambling already had a 6-0 advantage before the Tigers roared away in the fifth inning, pushing across 11 runs in the stanza on eight hits and three Jarvis Christian errors.
