| NCCU's Glosova Repeats As Regional Scholar Award Winner Tuesday, August 13, 2002 NCCU'S GLOSOVA REPEATS AS REGIONAL SCHOLAR AWARD WINNER PRINCETON, WV -- For the second year in a row, North Carolina Central University cross country/track & field senior Katerina Glosova has been selected as the recipient of the NCAA Division II Conference Commissioners Association Women's South Atlantic Region Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award. A male and female Division II Scholar-Athlete of the Year will be chosen from the 16 regional winners (eight men and eight women). A native of Cernotin, Czech Republic, Glosova boasts a 3.970 overall grade point average with a major in Hospitality and Tourism. During the 2001-02 athletic campaign, Glosova won her third consecutive CIAA Cross Country Championship and captured six individual conference titles during the indoor and outdoor track seasons. She also claimed honors as a National Champion by winning the 800-meter run at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships and placed second for All-American status in the same event during the outdoor national championships. Glosova's list of awards from the past year includes the 2002 Southeast Regional Indoor Track Female Athlete of the Year, the 2002 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and the 2002 LeRoy T. Walker Medallion of Honor as the NCCU Female Student-Athlete of the Year. She was also voted 2002 CIAA Indoor Most Outstanding Female Track Athlete after winning conference championships in the 800m and 1600m runs, and later selected 2002 CIAA Outdoor Most Outstanding Female Track Athlete after three-peating as conference champion in the 1500m and 3000m runs, winning the 800m run, and anchoring the championship 4x400m relay squad. Glosova, an “A” Honor Roll Dean's List student, University Scholar and member of the University Honors Program, also found the time to serve as Treasurer of the NCCU Student-Athlete Advisory Council. The NCAA Division II Conference Commissioners Association Regional Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards, sponsored by Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex, provides the opportunity for Division II to highlight the extraordinary achievements of its student-athletes. DII CCA President and Commissioner of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Barry Blizzard explains that the award showcases the talent at the NCAA Division II level. "Division II has the best of both worlds," explains Blizzard, "great athletes and great students." The commissioners from the regions that comprise the Division II basketball alignment selected the regional winners. To be nominated, a student-athlete must have attained a 3.0 career cumulative grade point average and possess outstanding athletic credentials. With a strong commitment to education and a long-standing relationship with Division II athletics, the involvement of Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in the award represents a natural fit. "Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex has become a destination for top collegiate athletics, particularly at the Division II level," said Matt Hickey, programming manager for Disney Sports Attractions. "Having worked with the Division II Commissioners Association on the creation of Disney's Division II Men's and Women's Tip Off Classic basketball tournaments, we are thrilled to continue our involvement with the Scholar Athlete Award, which honors the academic and athletic accomplishments of Division II's top student-athletes." The eight women's regional winners are Adriane Blewitt (Ashland University); Katerina Glosova (North Carolina Central University); Laura Hall (Indiana University of Pennsylvania); Jeanette Mott (Pittsburg State University); Amy Pope (California State University, San Bernadino); Heather Schlesinger (Assumption College); Kristina Styrna (University of West Florida); Jill Theeler (North Dakota State University).
