(Raleigh, NC) – The Shaw men’s tennis team easily defeated CIAA foe Johnson C. Smith 8-1, giving the Bears an 8-0 conference record and a solid grip on first place. JCSU falls to 8-3 in the conference, one game behind Virginia State.

DOVER, Del.-In a match that was rescheduled several times, the University of
Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) finally got to play Howard University, this time at the
Colonial Racquet Club in Dover, Del. The Hawks didn't have home court advantage and
it showed, as the Fighting Hawks fell 4-0 and the Lady Hawks, 5-0 in "knock-out" style
matches, where a match ended once it was decided.

Shaw Siblings Named CIAA Tennis Players of the Week

Tennis team picked up their first win of the season this past weekend with a 4-3 win over
Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) rival Coppin State in a non-conference tilt at
the Hawks Outdoor Tennis Complex on Sunday. They almost had two wins over the
weekend, taking a heartbreaking defeat by the same score on Saturday to in-state school,
St. Mary's.

NEW ORLEANS -- Xavier University of Louisiana's Sean Richardson is the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week in men's tennis for March 15-21.Richardson, a sophomore from Ellenwood, Ga., and a 2008 graduate of Stockbridge High School, was 3-0 in singles and 2-1 in doubles during the weekend and helped the Gold Rush defeat Mobile and Spring Hill to clinch the No. 1 seed for next month's conference tournament.

Last week, both players continued season-long winning streaks. Kalada Kienka, a junior from Lagos, Nigeria, went 4-0 on the week, handily defeating opponents from Chowan, Bluefield State, Charleston, and Division I Norfolk State. In the eight sets in these matches, he dropped a total of four games.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Both Xavier University of Louisiana tennis teams concluded the AUM Spring Invitational with 5-1 losses Sunday to Oklahoma Christian.The Gold Rush (7-6), ranked 13th in the NAIA, lost its fifth in a row and finished 0-3 in the event. All the losses at AUM were to ranked NAIA opponents.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Xavier University of Louisiana's Angelina Callis defeated Brenau's nationally ranked Kate Mazackova in straight sets Saturday, but that was the lone highlight for the Gold Nuggets in a 5-1 women's tennis loss to the Golden Tigers in the AUM Spring Invitational.Xavier's women (9-6) later lost 5-0 to Lindsey Wilson, and Xavier's men (7-5) lost 5-0 to Auburn Montgomery.
