Virginia Union University's Deonte Moore scored a career-high 17 points, but Lincoln University defeated the Panthers 74-67 on Saturday, February 14, in Lincoln University, Pa.

Moore's previous high at VUU was 11 points against Shaw University on November 24, 2014.

VUU's Avery Jirmnson scored 16 points and had five steals while teammate Ray Anderson had 13 points in the game.

The game was tightly-fought throughout, with the lead changing six times.

VUU trailed by just two at halftime, 36-34, but Lincoln came out on fire by scoring the first nine points of the second half to take an 11-point lead (45-34) at the 16:35 mark.

Virginia Union fought back, however. Anderson hit a pair of free-throws to pull the Panthers to within 51-47 with 10:37 left to play.

The second half was marked by surges by both team. After VUU pulled to within four, Lincoln went up by nine points twice before Virginia Union pulled to within one (60-59) on a steal and a layup by Jirmnson with 4:56 left to play.

That would be as close as VUU would get, though, as Lincoln scored the next six points. The Lions secured the wins on free throws.

The loss dropped Virginia Union to 8-16 overall and 4-10 in the CIAA. Lincoln is now 15-9 overall and 9-5 in the CIAA.

The Panthers return home to Barco-Stevens Hall for their final home game of the 2014-15 season when they meet Elizabeth City State University at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 18, in Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.

MYERS, RMIDI KININI NAMED UMES PRMC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Myers set pace for men’s basketball; Rmidi Kinini wins accolade at conference tournament

MATT MCCANN
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. — Sophomore track & field athlete Khalil Rmidi Kinini (Malaga, Spain) and senior men’s basketball forward Mike Myers (Camden, N.J.) were named the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Peninsula Regional Medical Center Athletes of the Week for the week ending on February 16th. Rmidi Kinini is being named for the eighth time this year while Myers is being named for the sixth time.

Myers contributed a pair of all-around performances last week. In the victory over Norfolk State, Myers picked up his sixth double-double on the year, putting up 18 points and 13 rebounds as the Hawks came back to win. He would come a rebound short of another double-double on Homecoming against Delaware State, but he led the Hawks with 23 points. During the two game, Myers also added three steals, two blocks and an assist.

Rmidi Kinini was spectacular once again for the Hawks track team. Competing on a team that took third at the MEAC Championships this past weekend, he was named Outstanding Men’s Runner, claiming victory solely in three events and taking part in a fourth. Rmidi Kinini dominated the distance events, winning the mile run, 3000 meter run and 5000 meter run. He also ran a leg in the distance medley, helping the foursome to victory. Of the team’s 108 points scored, Khalil was responsible of 32 ½ of them.

Alabama overwhelms UMES in Sunday matinee
 MATT MCCANN

HOOVER, Ala.  — In the series finale at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore struggled against the vaunted lineup and talented pitching of the Alabama Crimson Tide. When it all said and done, Alabama had swept UMES with a 19-0 victory on Sunday afternoon. The loss will make the Hawks 0-3 to start the season.

As with Saturday’s contest, Alabama went right to work on the Hawks starting pitcher, junior Tanner Whiteman (Cazenovia, N.Y.). Three out of the first five batters would reach base, all of whom scored thanks to a two-run triple and a sacrifice fly, immediately giving Alabama a 3-0 lead after the first inning.

However, it was the third inning that secured the game for the Crimson Tide. A leadoff walk and two bunt singles soon exploded into a six run inning. Whiteman was pulled after the first five runners reached base, and freshman Scott Bean (Harveys Lake, Pa.) was called upon in relief. He would give up a double and a sacrifice fly that extended the Alabama advantage to 9-0.

The Crimson Tide added an additional run in the fourth, and then went off again in the seventh, scoring nine runs on six hits that further cemented their third win in a row.

Among the positive story lines for the Hawks was the performance of sophomore catcher Justin Dattilo (Pittsburgh, Pa.). He reached base twice for the second straight game, earning a walk and a single. Dattilo finished the series with a .333 batting average. Junior Will Turley (Greensboro, Md.) contributed an inning of scoreless relief for the second straight contest, and senior Devin Repine (Salisbury, Md.) pitched a scoreless bottom of the eighth in his season debut. UMES also kept a clean record in the field, going the full nine with surrendering an error for the first time this season.

Although everyone contributed for Alabama, they were once again led by outfielder Casey Hughston, who went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and five RBIs, all while falling a homerun short of the cycle.

The Hawks will stay in the Old Line State for their next matchup, a single game versus Navy on Wednesday. After that UMES will travel to Lexington, Va. to face VMI and Buffalo at the VMI tournament

BUZZER BEATER LIFTS TROJANS TO 53-50 WIN OVER ECSU

Trojans Rally in Final Moments to a Thrilling Victory

February 14, 2015

PETERSBURG, VA- Lamar Kearse swished a three pointer from the top of the key as time expired to give Virginia State University a thrilling 53-50 win over Elizabeth City State University Saturday afternoon at Daniel Gymnasium.

The Vikings had to overcome a woeful 4-24 shooting performance in the first half and faced a 26-18 deficit at the intermission.

At the start of the second stanza, in was the Trojans’ turn to struggle offensively. Virginia State was held without a field goal over a nearly seven minute drought while ECSU scored 11 straight to take a 30-26 lead. Xavier Parham’s three-pointer gave VSU their basket of the second half at the 13:32 mark.

Virginia State (17-6, CIAA 11-3) briefly pulled ahead 34-33 with 9:08 to go when Tyrece Little converted one of two from the free throw line.

The Vikings were in front by six, 42-36, with 4:51 left and held their biggest lead of the night, a seven point edge (49-42) with just 2:09 to go. Kearse, the CIAA’s leading three-pointer shooter, got his first of six tries from beyond the arc to fall with 1:52 left in the game. That shot sparked an 8-0 run and with 34 seconds left VSU clung to a 50-49 lead.

With 21 ticks left Darrell Ward sank one of two from the free throw line to tie the game at 50. The Trojans with no timeouts and the shot clock off held for one shot, clearing out for Kearse who drained the three-pointer at the buzzer for the walk off win.

Elijah Moore and DeCarlos Anderson tied for high scoring honors with 14 each for their respective teams.

ECSU (9-18, CIAA 2-12) will return to action on Wednesday against Virginia Union in Richmond, VA.

Eagles Improve to 11-0 in MEAC with 29th straight victory over a conference opponent

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A 12-point halftime lead turned into a second-half deficit, but North Carolina Central University withstood the surge by Bethune-Cookman and the Eagles pulled away for a 65-51 road victory inside Moore Gym on Saturday afternoon.

NCCU (19-6, 11-0 MEAC) has now defeated 29 consecutive MEAC opponents, one of the nation’s longest streaks against conference foes.

The Eagles strolled into the locker room with a 33-21 cushion after the opening 20 minutes. The host Wildcats steadily chipped away at the NCCU’s advantage and took a 42-41 lead on a pair of free throws by Brandon Stewart with 11 minutes remaining.

The visitors and defending MEAC champions responded just 16 seconds later with a three-pointer by Anthony McDonald for a lead the Eagles would not relinquish.

When Stewart’s layup pulled B-CU to within one point of NCCU at 7:23, McDonald struck again with a triple from long distance, followed by an alley-oop dunk to Jordan Parks to increase the margin back to 53-47 with 5:34 left.

Bethune-Cookman made it a one-possession game at the 4:36 mark, but the Eagles closed out the victory with a 12-1 run to end the game.

Parks scored a team-best 16 points, including nine in the second half, to top four double-digit scorers for NCCU.
